How to stretch ballet flats
Yes, I think we can all agree that the ballerinas are an essential part of your shoe collection. However, with everything that's great about these shoes, there are some downfalls, and comfort is one of them! Here are a few handy tips on how to stretch your shoes to makes them more comfortable to wear.
- Use a stretcher tool:
Preparing your ballerina shoes for stretching may depend on the shoe's fabric. You should dampen leather and heat shoes that are made from synthetics with a hairdryer. Slip a shoe stretcher inside the shoe. Twist the knob until the shoe stretcher fits snugly inside the shoe. You should keep turning until you see pressure on the shoe. The next morning, loosen the stretcher and pull it out. Try on the shoe and see what the fit is like.
- Use plastic bags and ice:
Fill two resealable bags halfway with water and seal them tightly. Place the bags inside your shoe and push down to the toe area. Place the shoes into the freezer and wait for the bags to freeze. When the water freezes, this will gradually expand the shoes. Now, take the shoes out of the freezer and pull out the bags. Then, place your feet in the shoes immediately. This will allow the shoes to retain their shape and not shrink.
- Use a hairdryer:
Wear a thick pair of socks and put on your flats. Start drying your shoes with a hairdryer, paying attention to the toes. Allow to cool down whilst you are still wearing them. Be patient, and don't take them off until they have completely cooled down.
How to wear ballet flats in winter
As you all already know, winter is fast approaching, which means you are probably going to have to switch your choice of footwear. For the humble ballet flats, the winter isn't ideal weather to wear them. But fear not! For all you ballerina shoe lovers out there, here are a couple of handy tips to incorporate them in your winter outfit:
- Go for flats made of leather/ imitation leather:
The winter is damp, wet and at times very snowy! Flats made of cotton or canvas can get wet very easily in wintery conditions. Another benefit of leather ballerinas is that you can wipe them off with a cloth to keep them clean and free of snow or slush.
- Wear socks or tights:
Woollen or fleece tights keep your legs and feet warm when you're wearing flats. Another option is to wear knee length socks. Long socks can look stylish with a woollen skirt. For a little bit of colour, opt for patterned designs. They work particularly well with black ballet flats.
- Check your flats for good grip:
Whilst wading through the wintery streets, you may be unaware of black or hidden ice. This could be dangerous if you were to slip and be injured. It's imperative that you inspect the soles. Check that the soles are firmly secured to the rest of the shoe and have a profiled or textured sole.
How to wear ballet flats with a dress
Thanks to the revolution of modern design, brands have been able to make flats as trendy as stilettos and pumps, which can match with almost any kind of dress. Here are a few outfits that are trending this year:
- A classic LBD can be paired with a graphic tweed blazer. Complete the look with black ballet flats with straps.
- It's all about blazers this year! Pair a white blazer with a golden metallic mini dress and complete with gold ballerinas.
- For more elegant occasions, a plunging V-neck cream dress works beautifully with lace-up ballet flats.
